After the fall of the capital to the Burmese invasion, much of the city was destroyed. Nevertheless, the central part of the royal palace and many majestic temple buildings have survived to this day.

At the end of the 20th century, the historical center of Ayutthaya became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
